Plot summary
Zoe Parker, a medical student, goes reluctantly to a party at her school and, sent to the morgue for a keg of beer, is cornered there by Max, a patient fixated on her. A corpse reanimates and bites his shoulder. Zoe runs out to warn the party before the dead swarm the building, then escapes through a window into a city overrun. Survivors are taken to refugee camps, and Zoe is assigned to High Rock Emergency Bunker, which Lieutenant Miguel Salazar runs. Five years later the bunker is out of touch with the remaining camps, and Miguel doubts any cure can be made; Zoe tends the camp's sick with her friend Elyse and studies samples of rotter blood. When Lily, a girl, comes down with pneumonia, Zoe joins a supply run for medicine at Whittendale University and finds Max.
