Plot summary
C.J. Walker wants to build a working time machine, and her best friend, Sebastian Thomas, builds it with her. The two hope to present the project at a science expo and earn university scholarships. Their science teacher, Mr. Lockhart, asks C.J. to weigh the ethical questions that time travel raises. A first attempt fails just before the last day of school; a second sends them back twenty-four hours, and C.J. uses the trip to prank her ex-boyfriend, Jared. On July 4, C.J.'s older brother Calvin leaves a party with his friend Dennis, and a police officer, mistaking the two men for robbers, shoots Calvin. After the funeral, C.J. insists on going back to save him.
