Plot summary
Brett hosts a TV music show, and Tash writes about science, but the two of them feel far apart. On the evening of their first anniversary, while they are on a boat under a full moon, Tash says she wishes they could trade lives. When they wake the next morning, they are in each other's bodies. Both now have to adjust to strange bodies and to unfamiliar days at work and with friends.

- Jacqueline McKenzie was the first choice to play Tash, but the part ultimately went to Claudia Karvan, while Guy Pearce was cast as Brett.
- Writer-director Megan Simpson Huberman based the character of Brett partly on her ex-boyfriend David McComb, lead singer of the Australian band The Triffids, as well as on several other men she had dated.
- Huberman first conceived Dating the Enemy in the late 1980s, taking a few weeks' leave from her day job production managing and directing Japanese commercials in order to write the screenplay.
- Huberman wrote the film's novelisation in a four-week stretch during post-production, with Thea Welsh completing the first draft; Harper Collins published it in September 1996.
