Plot summary
In November 1982, Ray and Olivia Anderson's eight-year-old daughter Maisie disappears from their small Pennsylvania town without a trace. One year later, relatives gather at the couple's house after a memorial service: their son Noah, Ray's brother Billy, Olivia's sister Arlene with her husband Kenneth, and Olivia's widowed brother Morgan. Dinner turns tense when Ray argues with Billy, and Morgan's attempt to talk about grief goes badly. Later that evening, lights begin to play strangely in the nearby forest. Ray takes it for children with flares and sets out with Morgan, Billy and Kenneth to confront them, while Olivia and Arlene stay behind.
