Plot summary
On a stormy night in the 1930s, the family of the late Sinas Cavinder gathers at his country estate for the reading of his will. Among those present are Burling Famish Jr. and his wife Pristy, big-game hunter Jack Tugdon, Lord Partfine, Mrs. Hausenstout, Seyton Ethelquake, and Cavinder's ward Sabasha Fanmoore. Rival reporters Eight O'Clock Faraday and Billy Tuesday arrive with cab driver Happy Codburn, and psychic Mrs. Cupcupboard and stranded motorist Ray Vestinhaus also join the party. The guests talk of the death threats made against Sabasha, of a serial killer called the Cavinder Strangler who is still at large nearby, and of the ghost of Sarah Cavinder, due back that same night. Lawyer Farper Twyly then reports that a letter amending the will has been stolen.
