Biography

Elizabeth Sellars was a Scottish actress who began appearing on stage at 15 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Born in Glasgow, she entertained British troops with ENSA during World War II and made her London stage debut in 1946 in The Brothers Karamazov, directed by Peter Brook and starring Alec Guinness. She later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Elizabeth in Richard III and Gertrude in Hamlet. Her film debut came in Floodtide (1949), and she went on to appear in a long run of British films, usually in supporting roles, and in several Hollywood productions, among them The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Désirée (1954), The Day They Robbed the Bank of England (1960), 55 Days at Peking (1963) and The Chalk Garden (1964). She was also a frequent presence on television, including A Voyage Round My Father (1982) with Laurence Olivier.
