Dorothy Neumann
Biography
Dorothy Neumann was an American character actress whose six-decade career encompassed theater, film and television. A New York native, she began on the stage and in the 1940s and 1950s was a proprietor and performer at the Turnabout Theater in Los Angeles, where she was also a member of the Yale Puppeteers. She moved into screen work in the mid-1940s, accumulating more than 130 film and television credits, usually in small supporting parts. Neumann became particularly known for horror and fantasy roles, often playing witches, crones and gypsies. Among her film appearances were Sorry, Wrong Number (1948) and The Terror (1963), and she played the murderer Leona Durant in an episode of Perry Mason. On television she appeared in The Twilight Zone and Bewitched, and in 1962 she portrayed Martha on the Western The Virginian.
