Plot summary
Sara Diaz, a single mother in New York City, comes home one night to find her 11-year-old son David at a neighbor's house where kids are drinking and smoking marijuana. She pulls him out, they argue, and he falls against a glass coffee table, injuring his forehead. The next day a teacher notices the bruise and the school suspects Sara of hurting him; the principal calls child services agent Luis Sanjuro, who questions David's younger sister Tia and places both children in institutional care. Sara is told to go to juvenile court. Her case is assigned to Judge Martha Schulman, who is adjusting to her son Elliot leaving for college. Sara's court-appointed lawyer is Ally Fisher, a top-of-her-class but inexperienced young attorney.
