Marie Kean

Biography

Marie Kean was an Irish actress of stage and screen whose career lasted over 40 years. She grew up in Rush, County Dublin, trained at the Gaiety School of Acting, and belonged to the Abbey Theatre company until 1961. Her role as Mrs. Kennedy, the matriarch in the Radio Éireann serial The Kennedys of Castleross, made her famous in Ireland, and she stayed with the program for its 18-year run. A Jacob's Award came in 1968 for playing Winnie in RTÉ's television version of Samuel Beckett's Happy Days. She acted in plays by Synge, O'Casey and Friel, and in 1969 she starred in the premiere of John B. Keane's Big Maggie. Her films included Barry Lyndon (1975), playing Barry's scheming mother for Stanley Kubrick, Ryan's Daughter (1970), as a bigoted shopkeeper for David Lean, and The Dead (1987), her last movie, in which she was Mrs. Malins. In 1978 she received a State of New York best actress award.

Kean won a Jacob's Award in 1968 for playing Winnie in RTÉ television's production of Samuel Beckett's Happy Days, a part she had already played on stage and later called her favorite.
