Plot summary
Rain City is run as a military state, and Wanda's Café is a gathering place for a mixed crowd. John Hawkins, known as Hawk, has served eight years in prison for killing the mobster Fat Adolph, a crime he admits, and he comes back to the café, which belongs to Wanda, once his lover. She gives him a room without asking anything in return and has just taken on a new waitress. Georgia reaches the city with her husband Coop and their infant son Spike; the family lives in a shabby camper while Coop looks for work and finds none. Solo, a regular at the café, draws Coop into his criminal business, which runs against the interests of the gangster Hilly Blue. Hawk grows protective of Georgia and her son.
