Plot summary
In a small Georgia town, Lucy, Kit and Mimi buried a wish box as children and promised to dig it up on graduation night. By then the three have drifted apart. Reunited, they recall what each once wanted: Kit to marry, Lucy to find the mother who left her, Mimi to travel to California. Mimi, five months pregnant, wants to audition for a record company in Los Angeles. Kit plans to see her fiancé, a student at UCLA, and Lucy intends to look for her mother in Tucson, Arizona. Without telling Lucy's father Pete, they set off with Mimi's friend Ben in the yellow 1972 Buick Skylark convertible. In Louisiana the car breaks down, and with money short Mimi suggests karaoke at a bar in New Orleans for tips.
