Plot summary
The story comes from Dostoevsky's 1866 novel, told here in two parts. Raskolnikov, a former student in St. Petersburg, cannot cover the rent on his apartment. He forms a plan to kill a pawnbroker, convincing himself that an intelligent man can commit such an act without guilt or regret. Detective Porfiry leads the police inquiry into the crime. As the investigation goes on, Raskolnikov is torn between hiding what he has done and the pressure to admit it. The production was filmed on location in St. Petersburg, where the squalid rooms and streets he lives among are part of what drives him toward madness.
