Plot summary
The body of a lawyer known for corruption and for representing the county's worst criminals is found on the line dividing Maksville County from York County, which puts the case in two jurisdictions at once. Alden Rockwell, sheriff in Maksville, and Joanne Porter, newly appointed in York, are the two drawn into it. Rockwell follows his instincts, and Porter takes a methodical approach, and they clash over how the case should be handled. When Rockwell crosses the county line while chasing a person of interest, the friction between the two offices comes to a head. Solving the killing means they have to find a way of working together.
