Plot summary
Mina Westenra sees off her fiancé, the solicitor Jonathan Harker, who is traveling to Count Dracula's castle in Transylvania to arrange the nobleman's purchase of English property. The Count welcomes him and carries his trunk to his room, and Harker agrees to stay a month. Meanwhile Mina and her sister Lucy take a seaside holiday in Whitby, where Lucy's American fiancé, Quincey Holmwood, and Dr. John Seward, who runs the town's asylum, are among their friends. Seward's patient Renfield both worships and fears the Count. A storm drives the ship Demeter aground, carrying Dracula in the shape of a wolf and wooden crates of earth from his homeland. Lucy turns pale and weak, and Seward calls in Abraham Van Helsing from Amsterdam to examine her.
