Plot summary
Lieutenant Joe Conti orders a squad of the 2nd Infantry Division into the Belgian Ardennes near Elsenborn Ridge for a routine mission in December 1944. German mortar fire destroys the convoy, and 12th SS Panzer Division armor and infantry drive the survivors back. Trying to reach their own lines, the soldiers come upon a German experimental site, still smoldering after an accident. An OSS agent, badly burned, tells the squad that the Germans are close to a nuclear bomb that could decide the war, and asks them to bring out Doctor Luca Gruenewald, the scientist leading the program, who wants to defect. Cut off behind enemy lines, the soldiers head deeper into Germany after him.
