Plot summary
The Hurleys own a lumber mill and want all the timber in the valley harvested. Rex and Slim chase a runaway stagecoach. Rex stops it and pulls Jackie Reynolds and her maid Mattie clear, and the two women take him for the driver who let it run. Jackie and Slim then learn they share an inherited ranch with Carrie Hurley and her brother Daniel. The following day, Carrie urges them to sell their portion, and Rex blocks the sale. A new forest ranger in the valley declares the trees diseased and says they must be cut down, and Rex writes to the forestry department.
