Plot summary
In the 1980s, the choreographer Jeroen is rehearsing a ballet about Canada's liberation of the Netherlands and is unhappy with how his dancers read it. He shows a colleague a photograph of himself at twelve with the foster family he lived with during the war, then sets out for the village, looking for a Canadian soldier named Walt. The story returns to 1944, when the boy was sent from Amsterdam to the countryside to escape the hunger and, though the family had expected a girl, was taken in and treated kindly. A Canadian plane crashes near the beach, the liberators arrive, and Jeroen meets Walt Cook.
