Plot summary
Olga Stapels's middle-class mother strongly dislikes Eric Vonk, the sculptor her daughter takes up with, and blames him for the traffic accident that follows their first meeting. The two have sex in Olga's car right after she picks him up on the road, and her mother's opposition keeps them apart for a time, but they reconnect and begin a passionate affair that Olga's easy-going father views sympathetically. They marry, and Olga's mother and her closest friends accept Eric only grudgingly. He wins a 5,000-guilder commission for a statue for a hospital garden, with Olga as his model, and the Dutch queen unveils the finished piece.
