Chester Clute
Biography
Chester Clute was an American character actor who appeared in scores of Hollywood films from 1930 onward. Born in Orange, New Jersey, he was drawn to show business as a child when his father, a minstrel show musician, took him on tour. After high school he worked in construction and architecture before joining the Edward Forsberg Players stock company in Newark. He then spent three years in vaudeville and returned to the stage as a leading man in The Very Idea. In 1930 Warner Bros.-Vitaphone filmed his Thank You Doctor skit, and he followed it with the short comedy The Jaywalker. His Broadway credits included Ceiling Zero and Page Miss Glory. Diminutive and bald with a bristling mustache, he was usually unbilled in nearly 250 films, often playing small parts with one or two lines. He also acted in Australia, where a review praised his performance as Madame Lucy in Irene in Perth. He died in 1956.
