Plot summary
Gerard Reve is a Catholic novelist who drinks and is troubled by visions of death. He travels from Amsterdam to Vlissingen to address a literary society, and at the station he watches a young man he would like to meet. The society's treasurer, Christine Halsslag, films him throughout the lecture and then offers him a room at her home rather than the hotel that was booked for him, which he recognizes from a nightmare. They spend the night together. Christine tells him she is a widow; her husband Johan died in an accident. In her beauty salon Gerard finds a photograph of Herman, her boyfriend in Cologne, and recognizes him as the man from the station. He stays on, hoping to seduce him.
