Plot summary
Elise has a tattoo parlor in Ghent, and Didier plays banjo in a bluegrass band. Their first meeting at her shop ends with an invitation to one of his band's shows. He is a romantic atheist; she calls herself a religious realist. They fall in love, and when he hears her voice she joins the band as a singer. Some months on, Elise learns that a baby is on the way; the news shocks them both at first, then makes them glad. Maybelle arrives, and for a while the family and the band do well. Then Maybelle, at six, becomes seriously ill.
