Plot summary

Maurice Pogue works as a private investigator in Los Angeles, but retrograde amnesia erases every previous day when he wakes. To cope, he records spoken messages for himself, and from these recordings he learns that he is a crucial witness in a legal case. He also tells himself not to reveal his memory loss to anyone, because the man he is set to testify against is responsible for his injury. Among the messages is a woman named Sarah Novak, who says she has been living under the false name Beth Holly and has come to the city because someone is blackmailing her. With no reliable memory of whom to trust, Pogue must piece together the case from his own notes and recordings.
