Plot summary
Raised by Peter, the hare explorer who found him as a baby in a jungle temple, Chickenhare is half chicken and half hare, and he longs to follow his father's path. The Royal Adventure Society trials end in failure for him, since the disguise covering his chicken features weighs him down. To prove himself, Chickenhare resolves to find the Hamster of Darkness, and visits his uncle Lapin, imprisoned for trying to seize Peter's throne and knowledgeable about the artifact. Lapin escapes with a crew of prisoners and races after it too. Chickenhare and Abe, his tortoise servant, give chase, and in a desert city they meet Meg, a skunk explorer who offers to guide them across the Desert of Death.
