Plot summary

Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the ruling shōgun, names Asano Takumi-no-kami Naganori, lord of Akō, to receive envoys from the Imperial Court. The protocol official Kira Kōzuke-no-suke Yoshinaka is assigned to teach him the required ceremonies. Kira counts on payment for the hours the lessons cost him. Asano, young and certain that bribes corrupt government, gives nothing. Kira answers by withdrawing the courtesies owed to his pupil, and the slights leave Asano agitated and unable to steady himself. Yet he will not abandon his principles. When the reception is held at Edo Castle, he draws his short sword and wounds Kira on the head. Drawing a weapon there is punishable by death, and Asano is ordered to commit seppuku. His lands are seized and his samurai are dismissed, becoming rōnin who are forbidden to seek revenge.
