Biography

Setsuko Hara was a Japanese actress who became one of her country's most popular film stars during a career of about thirty years. Born in 1920, she was known for a screen persona built on daughters committed to their parents and domestic life. Her best-known work was with the director Yasujirô Ozu, with whom she made six films, including the Noriko trilogy; Tokyo Story (1953) is perhaps the most famous of these. She also appeared in films by Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse, Hiroshi Inagaki, and other directors. In 1963 she abruptly left the film industry at the height of her popularity, declining all further roles. Her screen career continued to be defined by her collaborations with Ozu and by the devoted-daughter characters she portrayed.
