Plot summary
In Japan, the pacifist Kaji has written a report on how Chinese colonial laborers are treated, and it earns him an offer: to serve as labor chief at a large iron ore mine in Japanese-colonized Manchuria, which exempts him from military service. He accepts and moves to the mining site with his wife Michiko, whom he has just married despite his misgivings about the future. The laborers are Chinese prisoners, and Kaji works to improve their treatment while raising the mine's output. Okishima is among the men he works with. His methods put him at odds with the mine's foremen, its administrators and the Kenpeitai military police.
