Plot summary
In 1630, after a long peace, many samurai in Japan have no masters and live in poverty. The rōnin Tsugumo Hanshirō comes to the Iyi clan's estate in Edo and asks leave to commit seppuku in its courtyard. Saitō Kageyu, the clan's senior counselor, suspects that Hanshirō, like other masterless men, hopes to be refused and given money instead. To test him, Saitō tells of Chijiiwa Motome, another rōnin who made the same request months before. The clan's senior samurai forced the ritual on Motome after discovering that his swords were bamboo. Hanshirō insists that his own request is sincere.
