Plot summary
Kaji lost his exemption from military service after protecting Chinese prisoners from unjust punishment, and he is now conscripted into the Japanese Kwantung Army. Because he is suspected of leftist sympathies, his superiors assign him the harshest duties in his recruiting class, though he shoots well and keeps strict barracks discipline. His wife Michiko writes to his commanding officer asking for understanding and later visits the military facility to show her love and solidarity. His friend Shinjô is likewise under suspicion because his brother was arrested for communist activities. Kaji considers crossing the front with Shinjô, but he distrusts the idea that desertion brings freedom and remains faithful to Michiko. He also objects to the cruel punishment of a weak recruit in his unit.
