Yumi Shirakawa
Biography
Yumi Shirakawa was an actress who joined Toho in 1956 at the age of 19. By the end of that year, the studio gave her her first starring role, opposite Kenji Sahara in Rodan (1956). Director Ishiro Honda then cast her in several of his later films, including science fiction entries like The Mysterians and The H-Man, as well as other films such as Inao-Story of an Iron Arm and The Scarlet Man. Her noble looks often typecast her as either beleaguered victims or patrician ice princesses, though she played a charming ingenue in The Telegraphed Man (1960). In 1961, Yasujiro Ozu put her in Autumn for the Kobayakawa Family, also known as Early Autumn, and she appeared that same year in The Last War (Sekai Daisenso). Her career continued mainly through television performances into the late 1980s. She died in 2016.
