Plot summary
At the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, Izo Okada has no money and no prospects. The masterless samurai, born poor, throws in his lot with the Kinnō-Tō, a band of Imperial loyalists based in Tosa whose leader is Takechi Hanpeita. Takechi puts a sword in his hand and makes him a killer, and Izo carries out the orders he is given, stubbornly loyal to the man who gave him a place. His work earns him a name among the hitokiri, the assassins of the Bakumatsu, and he imagines he has come up in the world. Sakamoto Ryōma warns him that Takechi keeps him as a dog.
