Plot summary
Kansuke Yamamoto is a samurai in the Sengoku period who wants a country unified and at peace. He enters the service of Shingen Takeda, lord of Kai, and becomes his adviser in matters of war and politics. He presses Takeda to kill the lord of the neighboring domain of Suwa and take the dead man's widow, Princess Yufu, into his household. Kansuke then persuades Yufu to accept the union and to bear Takeda a son, swearing his life to them both. Over the years that follow he uses military and political strategy to widen Takeda's realm, to advance the boy's claim as heir, and to prepare his lord for a reckoning with the armies of Echigo.
