Plot summary
Ryunosuke Tsukue is a master swordsman with an unorthodox style who lives without a moral code. He kills an elderly Buddhist pilgrim he comes upon praying for death, and shows no feeling. His fencing school schedules an exhibition match for him, not meant to be fatal. The opponent's wife begs him to lose and offers herself in exchange. Ryunosuke agrees. The husband learns of the arrangement and sends her a notice of divorce, and during the match, after the judge calls a draw, he lunges at Ryunosuke, who parries and kills him with a wooden sword. Ryunosuke flees the town, cutting down the dead man's clansmen who attack him on the way, and the man's former wife asks to accompany him.

- According to Geoffrey O'Brien, Toho imposed The Sword of Doom on director Kihachi Okamoto as an adaptation after the studio was dissatisfied with his film The Age of Assassins, completed in 1966 but not released until 1967.
- Kaizan Nakazato's novel began as a newspaper serial that ran for three more decades; forty-one volumes were published before it was left uncompleted at the author's death in 1944.
