Juliet Prowse
Biography
Juliet Prowse was a British-American actress and dancer who worked for four decades on stage, in television, and in movies. Born in Bombay and brought up in South Africa, she began dance training at the age of four. A talent agent spotted her dancing at a Paris club in her early twenties, leading to the part of Claudine in the Walter Lang film Can-Can (1960). Publicity grew after she danced the can-can for Nikita Khrushchev, who called it immoral. She followed that with G.I. Blues (1960) opposite Elvis Presley, then The Fiercest Heart (1961) and Who Killed Teddy Bear? (1965), and made a brief cameo in Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1970). On television she headlined the NBC sitcom Mona McCluskey during the 1965 to 1966 season, was a guest on The Muppet Show, and was host of PBS's Championship Ballroom Dance Competition. Her Las Vegas shows earned her Entertainer of the Year for Sweet Charity.
