Plot summary
Mario is a janitor and Saverio a teacher, friends driving through the Tuscan countryside. Waiting at a level crossing, Saverio talks about his sister Gabriella, depressed since a relationship with an American boy ended. They take a road through the fields, their car gets stuck and rain comes; at an inn they share a room with a stranger. In the morning a spear kills the man, and cloaked figures ride off. Downstairs, people dressed strangely tell them they are in Frittole, a village at the end of the fifteenth century. Vitellozzo, brother of the dead man Remigio, takes them in and speaks of a feud with Giuliano del Capecchio. They meet Parisina, mother of the two brothers, and work in the family butcher shop. Saverio settles into the era, while Mario meets Pia, a rich man's daughter.

- Halfway through the film Benigni and Troisi had shot so much superfluous material that they were forced to erase episodes, including one that would have cast their mutual friend Marco Messeri as Girolamo Savonarola.
