Plot summary

At 27, Brian Banks lives with his mother in Long Beach, California, on parole and required to register as a sex offender. Eleven years earlier, he and a classmate, Kennisha, slipped away to kiss; when teachers approached, he fled, and she accused him of rape. On his attorney's advice he pled no contest and received a six-year sentence. An ankle monitor and a rule keeping him 2,000 feet from schools and other public gathering spots block his hopes of playing football, and his record makes steady work hard to find. He approaches the California Innocence Project, where founder Justin Brooks tells him the courts need new evidence that incontrovertibly points to his innocence. Project lawyers begin interviewing his former classmates.
