Plot summary
Jenna Branson, a college student whose disorder makes certain noises unbearable, is unhappy at home, becomes noncompliant with her medication and runs away, taking refuge at a bed and breakfast kept by Ellie and Sam Austin. She bonds with a fellow guest, Gavin, and with Ellie. Mary Floresky, whose son Miles is dead, is approached by a psychic, Simon McNeal, who claims he is communicating with the boy; skeptical but wanting to speak to her son, she agrees to an experiment that could also benefit her work. Bennett, sent with his driver Steve to collect a debt, hears from a bookseller who cannot produce what he owes about the Book of Blood, a rare volume worth a million dollars in an abandoned town.
