Trailer

Plot summary

Penny adopts a White Shepherd puppy named Bolt, and five years on the two headline a hit television series in which they fight crime and foil the plans of Dr. Calico, who has taken Penny's father. To draw a true performance from him, the show's director stages the effects so that Bolt believes the set and his superpowers are real, which keeps him from living as an ordinary dog. After a cliffhanger episode, Bolt slips away from his trailer in Hollywood, is knocked unconscious and ends up in a box of packing peanuts bound for New York City. There, pigeons lead him to Mittens, a feral cat he mistakes for one of Calico's agents, and he makes her guide him back to Penny.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In the autumn of 2006, after Lasseter and other Pixar and Disney directors screened the film and gave Sanders notes, Catmull said that “somewhere along the way, the plot had also come to include a radioactive, cookie-selling Girl Scout zombie serial killer. I'm all for quirky ideas, but this one had metastasized.”
  • Sanders was removed from the project in December 2006 and within months had joined DreamWorks Animation. According to Lasseter he was replaced for resisting the changes the directors had suggested; Lasseter said Chris Sanders was “extremely talented, but he couldn't take it to the place it had to be.”
  • Following the story overhaul, the animation team was told to complete the animation in 18 months instead of the four years normally required to produce a computer-animated feature.
  • The design of the hamster Rhino in his plastic ball was based on executive producer John Lasseter's pet chinchilla, which was brought to an animators' retreat during the film's production.
  • Bolt is regarded as helping to instigate a rebirth of Walt Disney Animation Studios, setting the studio in a new creative direction that led to later acclaimed features such as Tangled and Frozen.
