Plot summary
Anne Marie Chadwick shares a small North Shore house with her fourteen-year-old sister Penny and her friends Eden and Lena. Their mother left for Las Vegas, so the group raises Penny while Anne Marie, Eden, and Lena clean rooms at a luxury resort. Anne Marie once showed promise in women's surfing, but a near-fatal wipeout left her afraid of powerful waves. She trains before dawn, hoping to overcome that fear for the Banzai Pipeline competition, where a strong result could attract a sponsor and pull them out of poverty. She also tries to keep Penny out of trouble. Then Matt Tollman, a professional football quarterback in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, arrives. After Anne Marie confronts a player who wrecked a hotel room, Matt asks her to teach him and his teammates to surf.
