Plot summary
Dana is eighteen and a trophy-winning surfer, and her father, Joel, wants her to go to college. She leaves California instead, carrying her late mother's diary of surfing years in South Africa and a wooden carving, while Joel is away on business. On the plane she meets a man named Grant, who says she should visit him if she is ever nearby. In South Africa she boards a bus to the beach, and a man follows her, trying to take her backpack. She calls to a girl her own age, Pushy, and says she saved her a seat. They surf together and meet Tara, a Roxy surfer, and the encounter breaks the board that belonged to her mother, which cannot be replaced. Back on the beach, her locker has been broken open, and her money and the carving are gone.
