Plot summary
Tommy De Coco and his brother Louis, known as Chubby for his build, labor on construction sites in the Bronx, and Tommy wants his elder son Stony beside him in a venture he calls De Coco and Son. Stony leans instead toward work with children, and a doctor opens the way for him to help on a hospital ward for young patients, where he tells them stories. Tommy dismisses that as women's work. At home, Stony's younger brother Albert will not eat, and his mother struggles with borderline personality disorder. Stony chafes at his father's harsh methods but is reluctant to cut ties with the family.
