Plot summary
The Great Spirit Mata Nui, ruler of the Matoran universe, is cast out of his home by his brother Makuta Teridax, who seizes his giant body. His spirit ends up inside the Mask of Life, which crashes on the barren planet Bara Magna. The mask gives him a new body, and he befriends a Scarabax beetle named Click. A member of the Bone Hunter tribe attacks him, and an Agori named Metus warns him about the planet's dangerous tribes. Metus brings him to the village of Vulcanus, where disputes between villages are settled by gladiatorial combat. When Mata Nui steps into a fight, he befriends the Glatorian fighter Ackar.

- Click, Mata Nui's beetle companion, was written to stay an inanimate shield for the rest of the film. Director Mark Baldo proposed that Click turn back into a beetle at will, and writer Greg Farshtey approved, finding the idea cute.
