Plot summary
A Harlem count house that local black gangsters operate for the Mafia is robbed of about $300,000 by Jim Harris, an ex-convict, and two accomplices. Gangsters and mobsters are killed in the raid, and two policemen die as the robbers get away. Don Gennarro learns of the robbery; his family holds territory in Harlem, and he fears he will lose ground to the black gangsters, so he gives the problem to his son-in-law Nick, an enforcer. In Harlem, Captain Frank Mattelli, a veteran of the area who is violent with suspects, arrives at the scene and finds that no one will talk. Lieutenant Pope, a relatively inexperienced investigator, has been assigned the case for political reasons, and Mattelli objects. Nick confronts Doc Johnson, who heads the black mob, over the weak security during the robbery.

- Co-producer Fouad Said talked Volker Bahnemann of ARRI's American division into lending the crew the brand-new Arriflex 35BL for a week, which made this the first feature film ever shot with that camera.
- Anthony Quinn, who was also an executive producer, wanted John Wayne and then Kirk Douglas as Captain Mattelli. Both said no, Burt Lancaster said no as well, and Quinn ended up playing the part himself.
- Quinn hoped to cast Sidney Poitier as Lieutenant Pope, but Harlem residents objected that Poitier was too Hollywood and not urban enough. Quinn backed down and Yaphet Kotto took the role.
- Bobby Womack's title song long outlived the film's reputation: after charting in 1973 it was picked up by Quentin Tarantino for Jackie Brown in 1997 and by Ridley Scott for American Gangster in 2007.
