Plot summary
Frederic was apprenticed to a band of pirates as a child, by a mistake that should have bound him to a pilot. His indentures end when he turns 21, and he leaves the crew, glad to be free. He meets Mabel, one of the many daughters of Major-General Stanley, and the pair fall in love and plan to marry. The pirates, though, have designs on the rest of the Major-General's daughters and mean to marry them as well. The Pirate King calls in an old debt, and Frederic is left between the respectability he wants and the duty the crew claims.
