Plot summary
Ed's Bar and Swill fields a softball club that spends its games brawling as much as batting, and Artie DeVanzo, who lives with his mother and cannot keep a job or a girlfriend, is one of its regulars. Their rivals are Manganelli Fitness, led by Dennis Manganelli. A fight in the first game of the season leads the town's police chief to rule that the club finishing higher stays in the league and the other is out for good. Artie's teammates, long the league's doormat, begin to practice. After a night out, Artie runs into an old flame, Linda Salvo, at a diner and goes home with her; he decides he wants more than one night.
