Plot summary
Ethan Wate lives in Gatlin, South Carolina, and counts the days until college takes him away. A girl he has never met keeps appearing in his dreams, and on the first day of junior year she enrolls at his school as Lena Duchannes. Classmates whisper that her reclusive uncle Macon Ravenwood and the rest of her family worship the devil, and when students pray to be protected from her, the classroom windows shatter. Ethan drives her home anyway. They bond over a locket he found at Greenbriar, and touching it together shows them a scene from the Civil War. Lena tells Ethan that her family are casters who work spells, and that her sixteenth birthday will claim her for the light or the dark. Her cousin Ridley and another dark caster intend to push her toward the dark.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jack O'Connell was announced as Ethan Wate opposite Alice Englert, then dropped out over a scheduling clash. Alden Ehrenreich stepped into the role instead.
- Richard LaGravenese shot a green-screen sequence of actresses playing Duchannes women from the Civil War onward, dressed by costume designer Jeffrey Kurland in gowns from the turn of the century, the 1920s, the 1940s and the 1960s, then cut all of it as an idea that did not work.
- Much of the supernatural chaos was built for real rather than added afterwards. Emmy Rossum recalled walking onto the stage and finding that the chandelier really moved and the chairs and the table really spun.
- LaGravenese coined the word "swamptronic" for the film's music, which was recorded at Abbey Road. Dhanni Harrison, son of George Harrison, played some of his father's own guitars and equipment on the soundtrack.
