Plot summary
The Tokugawa shogunate, seeking to restore peace to a war-torn country, asks an old master to raise a band of assassins. Azumi is raised on a secret mountain, the only girl among ten children drilled in swordplay and the art of killing and told only that a mission awaits them. Before the group sets out, their master pairs the students off and orders each pair to fight to the death; the five who survive, Azumi among them, descend from the mountain to kill three warlords whose ambitions threaten a new civil war. In a village along the way, the recruits must stand by while bandits destroy it, and their master finally explains what the killings are for.
