Plot summary

Godzilla is still weakened by the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria he was infected with during his fight with Biollante. The writer Kenichiro Terasawa hears about Japanese soldiers posted on Lagos Island in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign, where a mysterious dinosaur drove off the American forces attacking them, and he comes to believe nuclear testing on the island turned that creature into Godzilla. The businessman Yasuaki Shindo, who commanded the garrison, confirms the dinosaur existed. Then a craft called MOTHER lands near Mount Fuji. Its crew, the Futurians, say they come from the year 2204, where Godzilla has destroyed Japan, and propose going back to 1944 to remove the dinosaur before the tests. Emmy Kano, one of them, shows Terasawa a copy of his unpublished book as proof.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah drew controversy over its World War II scenes: Pearl Harbor Survivors Association member Gerald Glaubitz appeared on Entertainment Tonight alongside director Kazuki Ōmori and condemned the film as in "very poor taste", while original Godzilla director Ishirō Honda said the scene of Godzilla crushing American G.I.s went "too far".
Kazuki Ōmori's original draft made the dinosaur that became Godzilla a Tyrannosaurus, but creature designer Shinji Nishikawa rejected the idea, saying he "couldn't accept that a tyrannosaur could become Godzilla".
For the Godzillasaurus, the final suit mixed Tyrannosaurus and Godzilla features, real octopus blood was used in the bombardment scene, suit performer Wataru Fukuda worked the smaller arms with levers inside the costume, and the creature's distress calls were recycled Gamera cries.
Akira Ifukube only agreed to compose the film's score at his daughter's insistence, having been unhappy with how his compositions were treated in Godzilla vs. Biollante.
Planning the sequel stalled as producer Tomoyuki Tanaka's health worsened and Shōgo Tomiyama took over; Tomiyama blamed Godzilla vs. Biollante's failure on a plot too sophisticated for children, while director Kazuki Ōmori blamed competition from Back to the Future Part II and concluded audiences wanted time travel.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was the first Godzilla film since 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla to feature a newly orchestrated score by Akira Ifukube.
The Godzilla suits from Godzilla vs. Biollante were reused with modifications: the land and full-body suit got a wider, flatter head and was cut in half, the upper half serving for scenes of Godzilla emerging from the sea and close-ups in his first fight with King Ghidorah.
