Plot summary
In 1844, the Tokugawa Shogunate is in decline, and Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira of Akashi can murder and torture at will, protected by the shogun, his half-brother. Naritsugu is set to join the Shogunate Council, and Sir Doi Toshitsura, the shogun's justice minister, fears the promotion will push the lords Naritsugu has wronged into civil war. After the lord of the Mamiya clan takes his own life in protest, Sir Doi hires the veteran samurai Shimada Shinzaemon to kill Naritsugu. Shinzaemon recruits ten samurai, including his nephew Shinrokurō, and one rōnin, planning to strike at Naritsugu while he travels from Edo to Akashi, but Naritsugu's retainer Hanbei learns of the plan.

- Miike was a fan of Koji Yakusho's acting and made it a priority that Yakusho be cast in the leading role; he also sought younger actors for the assassins, among them Sousuke Takaoka and Takayuki Yamada, whom he had directed in Crows Zero and its sequel Crows Zero 2.
- Over half of the thirteen actors playing the assassins were reportedly inexperienced in sword fighting and horseback riding, and Miike wanted them to be just that, arguing that actors skilled from the start would have approached the action differently.
- Miike avoided CGI and storyboarding, insisting on shooting the scenes right away, though in a separate interview he said some CGI was used, albeit minimal.
