Plot summary
In Tokyo Bay, the Japan Coast Guard inspects an abandoned yacht. The vessel is destroyed, blood floods the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, and a video of the incident spreads online. Rando Yaguchi, the deputy chief cabinet secretary, argues that a living creature is behind it, and the emergency cabinet meets to work out what the creature is and whether it poses a threat. The creature moves inland through Kamata and Shinagawa, its advance forcing a chaotic evacuation, before it evolves into a bipedal form and goes back to the sea. Yaguchi is placed in charge of a task force that studies the creature while officials weigh military strategy and civilian safety.

- Shin Godzilla drew its inspiration from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster, while the original 1954 film was conceived as a metaphor for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- An upper-body animatronic of Godzilla was produced, but it went unused after Toho decided the monster would be created entirely with CGI.
- Hideaki Anno wanted to update Akira Ifukube's classic Godzilla tracks to modern stereo for the score, but the task proved too daunting, so he settled on using the original mono mixes instead.
- Funimation gave Shin Godzilla a one-week North American release in Japanese with English subtitles, making it the first Japanese Godzilla film to get a theatrical North American release since Godzilla 2000.
- UK distributor Altitude Films dropped Shin Godzilla, and Toho were not allowing any UK screenings at the time; Manga Entertainment later acquired the UK theatrical rights for an August 2017 release.
