Plot summary
Escorted by police to a hospital, Cain Burgess learns that his mother has died. He sees her body, escapes his guards, and forces his way into a private bar past the doormen. Over a drink he hears a regular named Tune describe how an unknown assailant killed a gangster called Rook. Cain laughs, and Tune, the other drinkers and the barmaid Bez turn on him. Cain claims to be a friend of Lincoln, the bar's owner, and fights the room until he can level a sawed-off shotgun and hold everyone where they are. Lincoln's lieutenant Hyde arrives, recognizes Cain as Lincoln's younger brother, and is kept with the rest. Cain shoots a customer who tries to intervene in the kneecap and blames Hyde and Lincoln for his condition.
